Made this countless times and it never gets old!…. 🥞😍
▶️Ingredients:
1 pound fresh okra, sliced into ½-inch pieces
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup cornmeal
½ cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon paprika (optional)
Vegetable oil for frying
▶️Instructions:
Place the sliced okra in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over it. Stir to coat well and let it soak for about 10 minutes.
In another bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix well.
Heat about ½ inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
Using a slotted spoon, remove the okra from the buttermilk, letting the excess drip off, and toss it into the cornmeal mixture until well coated.
Carefully place the coated okra in the hot oil in small batches. Fry for about 3–4 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crisp.
Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
Sprinkle with a little extra salt while hot, and serve right away as a classic Southern side — perfect with fried chicken, fish, or cornbread.
