Recipe: Spicy Beef Pho
Introduction:
Pho is a classic Vietnamese noodle soup consisting of savory broth, rice noodles, herbs, and meat, most commonly beef. This version of Pho is spiced with a flavorful broth that includes a mix of aromatic spices, creating a perfect balance of heat and savory depth. Ingredients:
200g of beef brisket or sirloin, thinly sliced
100g of rice noodles (bánh phở)
1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 small onion, thinly sliced
1 cinnamon stick
3 star anise
1 teaspoon of black peppercorns
4 cups of beef broth
1 tablespoon of fish sauce
1 tablespoon of soy sauce
1 teaspoon of sugar
2 tablespoons of chili paste (adjust based on spice preference)
Fresh herbs (cilantro, Thai basil, and green onions) for garnish
Lime wedges for serving
Bean sprouts (optional)
Sriracha or hoisin sauce (optional)
Instructions:
Prepare the Broth:
Heat vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sliced onion, cooking until fragrant and softened (about 2-3 minutes).
Add the cinnamon stick, star anise, and black peppercorns to the pot. Stir them for 1-2 minutes to release their aromas.
Pour in the beef broth and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer for about 30 minutes, allowing the spices to infuse the broth.
After 30 minutes, strain the broth to remove the spices and onions. Return the clear broth to the pot.
Prepare the Noodles:
While the broth is simmering, cook the rice noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
Assemble the Pho:
In individual serving bowls, place a portion of the cooked noodles. Arrange the thinly sliced beef on top of the noodles.
Pour the hot broth over the beef and noodles, ensuring the beef is lightly cooked by the heat of the broth.
Garnish and Serve:
Garnish with fresh herbs like cilantro, Thai basil, and green onions.
Add lime wedges, bean sprouts, and extra chili or hoisin sauce on the side for customization.
